Pedagogic informations

Training objectives
In the end, students will have the fundamental knowledge needed to characterize a combustion process (combustion mode, exhaust gas volume, composition of the exhausts, temperature, power released by given system) through calculation methodologies that will be taught. Thanks to various guided exercises, students will especially be able to perform energy and mass balances on industrial processes.

Learning objectives
Students will be able to:
1) characterize and differentiate different types of fuels according to their nature (students being strongly educated regarding the use of renewable fuels (biomass, biofuels))
2) calculate the equivalence ratio of a reaction medium
3) calculate lower and higher heating values
4) calculate adiabatic flame temperature
5) use the J-t diagram
6) estimate the flammable limits of a fuel/oxidant mixtures
7) characterize different types of flame (premixed, diffusion)
8) calculate the main characteristics of stoichiometric, oxidizing, rich and incomplete combustions (air requirement, exhaust volume, exhaust composition, etc.)
9) use combustion diagrams

Learning context
This course is a prerequisite to heating, furnace design and Energy Efficiency control courses in order to give the theoretical knowledge of combustion process before dealing with combustion technology processes.
